STEAMZone Sessions
Session 1

Crack The Code
Unlock the hidden world of music encryption by composing and decoding secret musical messages.

Session 1
Crack The Code
From Bach’s clever use of letter-to-pitch codes to modern Morse and number systems, students explore how composers have hidden meaning within music for centuries. They’ll learn multiple methods of musical encryption, then compose their own coded works. The session includes an AR creation project where students present and challenge others to crack their musical codes—bridging theory, creativity, and tech in a unique cross-curricular experience.
Session 2

Whalesong
Dive into the structure of whale songs and compose your own nature-inspired music using sound, shape, and form

Session 2
Whalesong
Students study the unique musicality of whale communication and analyzing real whale song excerpts and linking them to musical concepts like repetition, contrast, and formal structures (binary, ternary, rondo).
Using both graphic and traditional notation, students compose their own “whalesongs” that reflect natural sonic patterns. Their final compositions are brought to life through a custom-built AR experience, transforming scientific discovery into immersive sound storytelling.
Session 3

Instruments of The Orchestra
Explore how instruments bring animals to life in music—from Harry Potter to Saint-Saëns—then create your own soundscape.

Session 3
Instruments of The Orchestra
What does a bassoon say about a bear? Or a flute about a bird? Students explore how composers like John Williams used orchestral instruments to represent creatures in the Harry Potter series, and how *Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Aquarium” sets a magical scene using timbre and range. They’ll learn to think like a composer—choosing an animal, analysing its movement and mood, and selecting an instrument (or mix) that matches.
Using a DAW, students compose an original animal soundscape and design a Mastermind-style AR quiz to showcase what they’ve created and learned. Is your animal asleep, playful, sneaky, or fierce? The sound says it all.
